Go Wherever You Wanted To Go

The trip you can enjoy today because of the person you are may be a frustratingly unhappy one tomorrow because of the person you have become in the meantime. Go wherever you have always wanted to go. Go as soon as you can, for as far as you can, for as long as you can.

Not Good Company

Everywhere we look, the world urges us to turn on the radio or TV, to make a phone call, to see a movie. Many of us, I fear worry that, if left alone with our thoughts and feelings, we may discover that we do not make very good company for ourselves.

Philippine Independence

I prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos to a government run like heaven by Americans... Because, however bad a Filipino government might be, we can always change it.

Always at Your Side

Now you will fell no rain, for each of you will be the shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be the warmth to the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you. Go now to your dwelling, to enter into the days of your life together, and may your days be good and long upon the earth.

What is Your Heaven?

Heaven comes in may shapes and sizes. The heaven of the Eskimos, they say, is hot; The Arabs' is cool, with dancing girls. But give me a blue mountain lake at the end of a long climb. Frame it with timber untouched by the ax. Fill it with brook trout, deep-keeled, orange bellied, ready to the fly. Let the sun be warm after swimming and let the nights be cold under the stars. Let the first ray of morning light strike the snowfields of the western peaks; let the long clear note of the varied thrush announce the day.

Creative Achievements of Mind and Spirit

For 9000 years society has depended upon individuals for those creative achievements of mind and spirit that have guided it along the path of civilization.

The spark from heaven falls. Who picks it up? The crowd? Never. The individual? always. It is he and he alone, as artist, inventor, explorer, scholar, scientist spiritual leader or statesman, who stands nearest to the source of life and transmits its essence to his fellowmen.

Wisdom and virtue cannot be forced from a crowd as eggs from chicken under electrical lights. There is no such thing as general intelligence. There is only individual intelligence communicating itself to other individual intelligences. And there is no such thing as public morality. There is only a composite of private morality.
